Help Heidi Care for Sean

Donation protected
If you’ve lived in Galveston over the past 20 plus years, you’ve probably met or seen the name, Heidi Lutz. She’s a passionate and caring gal who needs a little help from her friends right now. The love of her life, Sean, is recovering from surgery to remove a tumor in his temporal lobe and a major stroke. Soon, she’ll be taking him home, which she jokingly calls The Church Street Rehabilitation Hospital, where she’ll be managing most of his care herself. Below is how’s she’s facing life in her own words. She’s been keeping friends updated on Facebook.

“A friend recently posted a video about the Choose Your Own Adventure book series. If you’re of a certain age, you might remember these books fondly. You got to the end of the chapter and were given two choices of which page to turn to next.

There were endless possibilities it seemed. Multiple ways the stories could end and you alone had the power to choose that ending based on the decisions you made at the end of each chapter. I’d spend hours trying to manipulate the story to the ending I wanted.

For much of my life, I’ve applied the same principles to everything I do. I carefully selected options at the end of each chapter that would get me where I wanted to be. Everything I’ve ever wanted, I made a choice that hopefully led to the next adventure I wanted.

Sometimes I got thrown into adventures I couldn’t escape, and the only choices I had were how I would choose to endure, to persevere. Sometimes our choices aren’t about endings but just getting to the next chapter.

Today was a rough day and the choice I made was to walk away for a moment. I came back and the next chapter was waiting. He calmed down. I calmed down. We shared strudel. A sun break in a dismal day.

These are the choices I will face in the weeks and months ahead when he transfers to the exclusive Church Street Rehabilitation Hospital (her home). It’s not really my first choice but it’s the only choice. So I will choose to be there for him, and I will choose to embrace the suck and continue to keep my eyes out for those sun breaks.

The ending is out of my control, but how we get through each day isn’t, and maybe that’s really the adventure we’re choosing.”

Heidi’s friends are setting up this GoFundMe to help cover costs that aren’t covered by insurance, including widening the bathroom door for wheelchair access, building a wheelchair ramp, and other expenses like a home health aid. His insurance only covers a limited number of hours of home care and his journey is estimated to be beyond that.
