Help Gregory Families Displaced by Hurricane Ida

Members of our local community are facing significant hardship in the wake of Hurricane Ida. As you may have heard, 44 families who were long-time residents of the Ron Jolyn apartment complex on Northfield Avenue were recently displaced from their homes.

The complex suffered significant damage due to a landslide caused by the heavy rains on September 1. Weeks after the storm, a report from the owner's engineer to the town resulted in the complex being deemed unsafe. Residents were abruptly evacuated without warning late in the evening on October 11 and will need to find new homes, as the complex will be demolished.

Two of the impacted families are part of our Gregory Community - including five children ages 5 to 11.

The displaced families are in temporary housing in local motels supported by the town for the time being, while they work to find permanent housing in a difficult, inflated real estate market. The families are in tight quarters trying to negotiate this difficult situation and shield their children from the extreme stress of being displaced. Parents have missed work, and even storing groceries or cooking simple meals is difficult under the circumstances. Further, due to safety concerns, the families have had limited access to the complex to collect their belongings, clothing and other necessities.
