Help Gloria Fight Cancer

Gloria Sander greets everyone with a welcome and a smile but now she needs some love in return.

Gloria has been beating the odds for 10 years after she was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. Opting to go with alternative health treatments for more than seven years has taken a financial toll on the local business woman. The combination of moving her restaurant, Gloria’s Soup and Sandwich, to a more central location in downtown Fort Saskatchewan, paired with a tough economy for everyone, and starting chemotherapy this year, the bills keep stacking up. None of her alternative treatments, which is a combination of various vitamins, mile toe and assessments by Alternative Health Edmonton, are covered by government health care.

More than seven and a half years she stopped treatments but then her symptoms came back and the cancer came back in her stomach. It was diagnosed as metastatic cancer and inoperable.
“They said it will never be cured but we can keep it at bay,” Gloria said.

“This money will help pay to go to the Cross Cancer Institute, taking time off work and cover the alternative health medications that I’ll be doing again,” Gloria explained.

“In the end, I think the alternative health will help once I’m in remission. The doctors said there was substantial difference in the amount of my cancer cells between when they first diagnosed me and when I had to start chemo. Once I’m in remission, it helps boost my immune system and it gives me energy. I know the alternative measures works because I did it for seven and a half years."

She decided to start chemotherapy in July 2016 and once the intense 12-15 rounds are finished, she will return to alternative measures to be proactive and maintain her health.

When Gloria is not behind her front counter making delicious homemade sandwiches and pouring homemade love into a bowl, her customers notice but they’re understanding and supportive.

“When I’m not here, they ask about me, always. After I do chemo, I try to have two girls working so I can take a break. I get really lethargic and just feel yucky. But my customers are wonderful and always say they’re praying for me. They’re just amazing,” Gloria said.

“I always say my restaurant is my healing peace because I have the best customers in the world.”

For those who donate towards this fund to help her with her battle with breast cancer, whether they be family, friends, customers, Fort Saskatchewan residents, or anyone who is willing to do a good deed, Gloria wants to thank every single one of you.

"Thank you for supporting my business and keep coming back,” Gloria said. "I want to thank you so much for the support, the love, and the prayers."
