Helping Chaz Douglas

Donation protected
FEB 2021 UPDATE:
The scope of our fundraiser has recently changed. Chaz is getting his own apartment from a local housing authority and is excited about this new development. He can apply to have a dog in the unit but won't be getting one just yet. He is receiving additional services to help him deal with the incident and I see him smiling and interacting again. I am grateful to see this spark and hopefulness for the future in him. He is starting from scratch as is generally the case for a first apartment. I would like to use the funds to get him started with some furniture, foods, pots, plates, etc.

**If you already donated towards a companion dog, I sent you a message in case you wish to have a refund instead.

ORIGINAL:

In June 2020, my neighbor Chaz Douglas was the victim of a racist incident where he was threatened with a gun and feared for his life.

Before this event I would always see Chaz out and about in the neighborhood, talking with neighbors and doing assorted odd jobs in his off time from an auto supply shop.

In the months since I have seen him become withdrawn and despondent. In talking with his mother she confirms that this has been a significant setback for him. I am concerned for his well being and while he continues to do therapy,  his mom knows he would benefit from the companionship of a dog again.

His beloved dog and constant companion Coach died a year earlier in June 2019.

Some of the therapeutic benefits of dog ownership that would specifically help Chaz include;

Decrease feelings of isolation and alienation.
Lift spirits and lessen depression.
Provide comfort.
Increase socialization and sense of community.
Decrease anxiety.
Reduce loneliness.

I'd really like to see Chaz back out in the neighborhood and interacting with the community and feel strongly that having a dog to walk and train would be a positive step forward.

Please help me raise funds that they can use to buy a golden retriever puppy and additionally offset the costs of dog ownership to help with veterinary costs and supplies that first year.
