Tragedy struck our family on Friday, February 16, 2018. My brother-in-law, Gary Rivenbark, fell 15 feet from a ladder while attempting to work on a rooftop HVAC unit as a favor for a friend.
He suffered multiple injuries, including a broken jaw, broken wrist, and a crushed spine. He crushed his T4 and T5 vertebras and severed his spinal cord. The doctor’s say he is paralyzed from the waist down and will never walk again. Their lives have been forever changed.
Gary has been in the trauma wing of the ICU on a ventilator since the accident. Last week they performed surgery to put in a tracheotomy. He still cannot breathe on his own. Gary has had to endure multiple surgeries in the last 3 weeks and will hopefully be transferred to a long term facility to begin therapy before going home.
This horrible accident has been so hard on my sister too. She is commuting almost an hour each way to the hospital every single day to be with her husband. The expenses are piling up and she is still trying to cope with all that has happened and everything that is still to come. She is overwhelmed beyond words.
The family has been doing what we can to help them out financially, at least with the immediate needs. But the medical bills alone will be astronomical. We are trying to raise funds to help with medical bills, renovations to their house to make it wheelchair accessible, and hopefully enough to modify their car to carry a wheelchair.
