My name is Garrad Hussein and I am a Private Hire Driver based in Birmingham. On 2nd December 2021 I had a very traumatic experience at work that has changed my life forever. I am unable to work while I have surgery and recover and with no sick pay from my work, I am struggling to support my young family and for their sakes, I must ask for your help.

I was performing a routine Bolt ride in Birmingham with a young male passenger. When I got to his destination I stopped and saw there were 5 other men there. The men got into the car immediately and held the rider down and proceeded to stab him repeatedly. When I saw this I was obviously shocked and scared and proceeded to try and get out of the situation by reversing the car. The men immediately pulled me out of the car with the car still in reverse. I fell and the wheels ran over both my knees and dragged me along with the car. The police and ambulance were called straight after the incident and I was taken to hospital immediately as my injuries were very serious.
I was in hospital for 5 weeks and had 3 operations with more needed in the future. I am not able to work due to the injuries and won’t be able for months potentially. I have been severely traumatised from this experience and truly shocked by the inhumane response from Bolt when I asked them for help.
I have a wife and young family that currently I cannot support and we are suffering extreme financial problems along with the stress that accompanies these situations. I am determined to get justice for what I have gone through from Bolt, from my attackers and from a system that creates extreme vulnerability for drivers by denying us basic rights and and protections. Working in the gig economy we do not receive any sick pay or support if we become ill or injured at work and unlike black cab drivers, cannot even count on a protective plastic screen being provided to protect us.
I have relied on family, friends and community to support me practically and financially as I still have bills and rent to pay and children to feed but without a steady income I find myself in a critical financial situation of debt and stress.
I feel humiliated and embarrassed to have to reach out to people for help but for the sake of my children I need to ask for financial assistance. The little I get from the authorities is nowhere near enough.
Your donation will really be appreciated and help me get through this very desperate situation. I will keep you updated on my progress and hope to be fully recovered in a few months so I can work and get back the dignity of earning and supporting my family.
