Help Fund the COVID-19 Effort in Malawi

Donation protected
Mr. Chimombo is a 70-year old man at high risk of COVID-19 infection in Lilongwe, Malawi and despite the efforts of the Malawi government and WHO, he won’t likely get a COVID-19 vaccine this year. He and hundreds of thousands of other people in Malawi will not receive a COVID-19 vaccine through the current program.

You can help donate to support COVID-19 vaccination efforts in Malawi. This project will directly fund vaccinations and vaccine-related essential costs through the long-standing collaboration at UNC Project-Malawi in Lilongwe. Our goal is to support and extend Malawi government-led COVID-19 vaccination efforts. This support will be used to accelerate access for high-risk individuals, health care workers, and their families and loved ones. Twenty dollars can support vaccination for a pair of grandparents in Malawi.

UNC Project Malawi: This is a collaboration between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Malawi Ministry of Health established in 1990. The project is based at the Kamuzu Central Hospital, a 1000-bed, public tertiary care hospital operated by the Ministry of Health that serves a population of nearly seven million people.

COVID-19 in Malawi: Malawi has had 32,831 confirmed cases and 1,083 deaths from COVID-19. COVID-19 spread to all the districts in Malawi. On July 10th 2020, UNC Project-Malawi donated over $50,000 worth of medical supplies to the Lilongwe District Health Office and Kamuzu Central Hospital as part of the COVID-19 response. This included oxygen containers, ventilators, protective equipment, and other essential medical equipment. More details about the UNC Project-Malawi COVID-19 response can be found here.

Director of UNC Project-Malawi Innocent Mofolo mentioned, “A little over 9 million people in Malawi are eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine, but so far the country has only secured enough vaccine for one out of every 36 people who are eligible. Everyone is doing their best, but we need to accelerate COVID-19 vaccination immediately.”
