Send Shenggen to High School

Donation protected
Shenggen is a middle school student currently enrolled in Muli middle school in Muli County, China. He comes from a small farming village, where his mother (age 58) and grandmother (age 72) live. They had originally planned for him to help with work on the family’s farm after he completed elementary school since they could not afford to send him to middle school and his grandmother was quickly approaching the age of retirement. In response to his family’s tight financial situation and his incredible academic performance, his elementary school selected him for the HIS scholarship, which would fund both his tuition and living expenses for middle school. With their financial difficulties no longer a factor, his mother and grandmother made the difficult decision to allow him to continue his education, despite desperately needing his help on the farm.

Shenggen is now in his third and final year of middle school and has shown incredible dedication to his academic career and an abundance of intellectual curiosity. Unfortunately, the HIS scholarship will only cover his middle school education, and in order for him to continue his education and attend high school he will need additional funding. If he does not acquire this funding he will have to return to his family’s farm and help his mother, who is now working alone since his grandmother has become too old, on the farm. This would make his middle school education pointless, as he would still only be able to contribute the same amount of money to his family as he would have if he had only completed elementary school. If Shenggen is able to attend high school, then continue on to receive a college degree, becoming the first person from his village to do so, he would be able to fully support his family, justifying the sacrifice made by his mother and grandmother.

We are hoping to raise $4000 to cover all 4 years of Shenggen’s high school education, since it was estimated that each semester would cost approximately $500 between tuition, transportation to and from the village during break, clothing, food, dorm supplies, medicine, and other essentials. This money would change Shenggen’s life as well as that of his mother and grandmother, providing them with a level of comfort they have more than earned. It could also help promote an increase in the implementation of scholarship programs similar to the HIS program if the Chinese government sees their effectiveness in providing diligent, hard working children with an avenue for success.
