Hi, I'm Freyja, a 24 year-old trans woman from the U.K.
I didn't want to make a fundraiser for surgery, but more and more time has passed and I am no closer to my goals. The GIC process of the NHS is long and difficult to navigate and while I would prefer not to pursue that route and receive treatment without anyone's help or money, I have reached a point where it cannot come soon enough.
I had my first appointment with the GIC in November 2019 after 2.5 years on a waiting list. Due to COVID-19, I am still waiting for the second appointment, at which they will consider providing HRT and will let me begin to ask about surgery which, at this rate, will not be available to me for at least another year, likely longer.
As I write this, proposed reforms to the Gender Recognition Act that would make healthcare and self-ID more accessible are being scrapped, and potential invasive policies regarding public bathrooms are being considered by the government. This is a step backwards and I am not holding out hope that there will not be further steps away from progress.
The waiting has been manageable for a time but it has begun to take a severe toll on my mental health and the idea of waiting potentially years more fills me with dread. It is for this primary reason that I am making this fundraiser, so I can pursue a private route to GCS and finally feel like myself.
