Help for the Palmer Family

Dear family and friends,

Over the past several months, many of you have expressed concern about our family’s well-being, especially Jenna. It’s been difficult for me to be completely frank about certain things. The truth is that my wife suffers from mental illness. It’s not an easy subject for her, or for most people, to discuss. However, I want to change that. At least, for us. Mental illness shouldn’t be embarrassing or shameful, although I know that these can be real feelings for the individual suffering from it. My wife is no less of a wife, mother, daughter, sister, or friend because she suffers from it. In fact, my admiration and love for her have deepened as I’ve witnessed her determination to cope with it alone through the years. The problem is that it can’t be conquered alone. My wife has made serious attempts to end her life recently to escape the torment. Her decision is going to have long-lasting consequences for her and our family -emotional, financial, physical, spiritual -though she may have felt that she was doing us a favor. I believe that our family can overcome this. We can’t do it alone, though.

Jenna went into cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure on February 7th. Extreme measures were taken to save her life, including large doses of medication to elevate her blood pressure. Unfortunately, her legs were deprived of oxygen in order to keep her vital organs alive. Jenna faces many months of reconstructive surgery and physical therapy. She’s still at significant risk of at least one leg amputation. The hospital bills have already soared into the tens of thousands of dollars that are not covered by insurance and continute to rise everyday.

If  you or someone you love is enduring “conflicts fought in the lonely foxholes of the heart,” I promise you that you are not alone. Jesus Christ speaks to you when He says, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

With love,

Brian Palmer
