Help for Afghan refugee family in transit

The family is now in Qatar and they managed to stay together which is a great achievement. We hope that they will be accepted soon for asylum in a safe country.

Roya(28)* fled Afghanistan recently with her sisters and parents as they feared for their safety in Afghanistan. They were supposed to go to the USA. However, now the family has been informed that one of the sisters can immediately go to the USA with her husband and children while the rest of the family will be sent to Albania for a year where their applications will be processed. The family left their possessions behind and they could not even withdraw their money from the bank before leaving. Now, stranded in a third country and facing separation after an arduous journey, the family is in a financial crisis and facing an uncertain future. Roya is worried about how she will be able to provide for her family in Albania and most particularly, she is worried about her aging parents. Roya is a highly educated woman and was working in a reputed organization. But at present, she and her family have no access to family savings. The family is traumatized after the journey, and is currently worried about how they will sustain their livelihood and their safety in Albania and if they will actually be taken to the USA.

There are countless families like Roya’s family who are stranded in different locations, without much support.

In the current Afghanistan crisis many families have left everything behind to escape the war. Many had to leave their belongings and their material existence and depart with just their clothes on their back.

Some of these families are being temporarily stationed in Albania before moving to other destinations such as the US. The conditions they live in are very dire. We are receiving worrying reports about the care they are receiving such as for example not enough food. There are suspicions that two minors have just passed away after negligient care at a refugee camp. And there are more reports of refugees in dire conditions in European countries.

We are collecting these donations to be able to give this family cash funds for temporary relief. We believe direct cash assistance to them is a way of providing support for a dignified passage. As governments are clamping down on assistance to refugees we believe it is left up to us to provide relief and support to them.
