Help for a cancer patient & family

Saul Martínez Trejo and his family need your help!

Our beloved friend from Los Flamingos Hotel, Acapulco, Mexico has been struggling for the past year with colon cancer. Thankfully, Saul does have health insurance, which covers basic services and also specialty care. However, his doctors now tell him that the chemotherapy is no longer working, and that the cancer has spread to his liver and his lung. His prognosis looks bleak at this point.

During his prolonged chemotherapy, Saul had to stop working full time at Los Flamingos, due to fatigue. Now he is unable to work at all. Saul is the sole provider in his household, as his wife, Francisca, does not work. His apartment (condo) is paid for, but he has still struggled to pay for utilities, repairs, maintenance fees, and other living expenses. Car maintenance costs about $300 per year. In addition, Saul’s illness requires a special diet, which he is having trouble affording.

Saul’s son, Alexis, is 21, and is studying licensed nursing at the Autonomous University of Guerrero. His tuition is minimal at the government-run school, but he requires about $1600.00 per year for fees and supplies. Until recently, Saul was able to help his son with expenses, but lately his contributions have been severely limited. Thus Alexis’ education also is threatened.

Saul was born in Acapulco on May 5, 1954, and is only 64 years old today. He has worked at several hotels in Acapulco, and, for the past 21 years, at Los Flamingos, most recently as the daytime receptionist. Anyone who has stayed at Los Flamingos in recent years will remember Saul most fondly. He was always more than a staff member to the guests. His kindness and graciousness made him a friend to everyone who met him. Guests return to Los Flamingos year after year, in part just to see Saul again.

This is a wonderful Mexican family, in a way typical of the warm-hearted people of the Mexican state of Guerrero, and also unique in itself. Through no fault of their own, they have been overtaken by debilitating illness, threatening their entire way of life.  Any help you can give them will be much appreciated. US dollars go a long way in Mexico, with the exchange rate at 21.66 Mexican pesos to 1 US dollar.
