Help fix Baileys ears.

Can you help Bailey?

Bailey is a three year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier that was found as a stray by a member of the public, she was then collected by our local dog warden and taken into our care. It was very obvious that Bailey had extensive ear problems.  Sadly although chipped no owner was traceable or replied to us advertising for the statutory seven days.

She was taken to see our vet who confirmed that she had been suffering from ear infections for a very long time that had been left untreated, this had meant that her ear canal had competely closed, being in constant pain and discomfort. She had been shaking her head to try and relieve the irritation so this had lead to heamatomas (burst blood vessels - leading to large blood pockets) in both ears. Poor girl wasnt in a good place.

Our vets discussed options and one concern was that due to the ear canals being closed, they couldnt actually see down to assess the extent of damage and wondered if it had gone to far to be fixed. We had to at least try.

So she began a course of oral antibiotics (as we couldnt get drops into the ear canal) and steriods.  Bailey throughout all of this behaved impeccably, never once protesting and giving the vet a little lick, as if you thank him for helping her.

One week later, the ears had improved and our vet was able to take a look and they where as bad as they had feared. Surgery was the only option to fix this for Bailey permanently, our vets also worried it maybe passed the surgery option and took photos to send to a specialist referal surgeon.

The operation is a Total Ear Canal Ablation or TECA, this will mean that both ear canals will be totally removed.

Thankfully they said although it was one of the worst cases they had seen it was operable - the bad news it would cost around £4000! After chatting to some rescue contacts that have had this procedure done on other dogs we heard of a wonderful rescue freindly and small referal surgeon called Mill Referrals, so a bit of correspondance between our vets and theirs and we soon had a new plan and a bill of £2250, which will also cover travel expenses and pre/post treatment plan visits.

Bailey is the sweetest, kind natured and loving dog you could ever meet, she has been a complete star throughout all vet visits and treatments. She adores people especially children and has been great meeting other dogs, and all while being in quite alot of discomfort. Although the treatment will help only the surgery stands a good chance of solving this issue.

So please help us make Baileys future positive and pain free again, she has suffered due to lack of care and treatment, but now we can fix that. Even a £1 donation will get us a step closer to our goal.

She is currently on a course of pre-surgery antibiotics and is booked for surgery for one side on 23rd October. If this goes well and heals as we hope she will have the other side done a few weeks later.

Please help Bailey by making a small donation and sharing her appeal.

Thank you from Bailey and the Greenacres Team.
