Hi, my name is Juliana and I am the co-founder and director of Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary (JAS).
We were the first Animal Sanctuary established in South America and we are currently the only Animal sanctuary in our country, Colombia. We are also a registered 501c3 non-profit in the United States.
Many of you know my story, if you don’t, I want to share it with you because to know my story is to know my heart...
I was just 5 years old when I decided I could not continue eating the body of animals adopted a vegetarian diet, however, over last 12 years I have completely abstained from any animal byproduct as a vegan.
I love all animals and so when I was just 11-years old I decided to become an activist for all animals. I dreamed that someday I would have a big place to save all the animals in the world. From that day, I worked hard and saved every coin I could until I had enough to put a downpayment on a piece of land to make my dream a reality. However, in 2016, I lost this land due to some legal manipulations.
Fortunately, I found that there was a big group of people outside of my country willing and ready to help save the animals, just like me. This is how I found my international family and now, thanks to all of you, we have a new property, and over 93 rescued animals (cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, rabbits dogs and cats) under our care.
Juliana's Animal Sanctuary has many programs in Colombia and internationally to help animals. Our mission is to educate people in Colombia and abroad about animal equality and their rights. For this reason, we have a few programs that are creating a positive future for animals here and in other countries.
You may be asking yourself: “Why should I help animals in other countries and not just the animals in my own country?”
Well, why not try to help them all, I say! After all, we are all living on the same Earth and our focus here has always been to teach equality for all beings, everywhere.
However, my heart wants to ask you for a little bit of extra help for the animals in Colombia, why?
You see, a big percentage of the animals killed here are for meat consumption that is sent to countries like yours.
On top of that, there is a tremendous lack of education about animal rights in South America and Colombia, especially. So if we don’t educate them here, it will be a great travesty for the people and the animals here.
Some facts you need to understand:
The number of street dogs in our country is enormous compared with other countries. Just in the capital city, Bogota, there are an estimated 1,600,000 street dogs!
Our animal sanctuary is literally the only hope for the animals raised for food in Colombia, not only as a safe haven but also to educate the public. There is simply nothing else like Juliana's Animal Sanctuary in Colombia.
We have some wonderful programs here to help animals:
- Free vegan cooking workshops for parents, Juliana made the first vegan cookbook in Colombia "Cooking with jaggy" You can find it on Amazon too.
- Spay and neuter programs for street animals (around 100 animals per month).
- Presentations at schools to promote animal rights and distribute free vegan snacks along with the country’s first animal advocacy comic book (JAS made the first animal rights comic in Colombia)
- We are the only Colombian organization with a 3D virtual reality experience to show people the reality of farmed animals.
- We have an international adoption program where we send dogs who can’t find a home in Colombia to the US or Canada.
- We also have a special care area for senior dogs and other senior animals at the sanctuary.
Apart from that, we have regular tours of the sanctuary to help people change the way they see animals and we've found this experience to a very effective in inspiring them to stop eating meat.
There is no doubt JAS is making a big difference in Colombia and South America and we want to inspire other Latinos to help animals and create more organizations.
One big advantage of being located in Colombia, South America is that it is much cheaper to run such programs than it would be in other countries. To give you an example, the annual operating cost of our sanctuary (that means food and care for all the animals) is only $70.000 a year. Compared with other countries, this could be 1/3 the cost of what they have to pay. So every donation here goes a very long way.
However, to cover all our educational programs we need around $40,000 a year. Thankfully, this is not a big concern because we have the support of other organizations in the US for this. So with this campaign, we want to focus on covering the basic needs of the rescued animals here.
This is where we urgently need your help — to cover the operating expenses of maintaining all the animal residents and future rescues under our care for 3 months
Remember, every dollar you give is automatically 3 times more powerful with the exchange rate. Yes, you may think it is not much but that small donation is way more here! So please don’t hesitate thinking that $5 dollar is too small, because my friend, it is big for the animals here!
