Help feed families at Hungerford School

Hungerford Primary School in Islington has seen a sharp uptick in need for support from its food bank since the start of the new term, which coincided with the start of the third national lock-down.

Open every Wednesday to local families, the food bank was initially set up in 2020. Whilst local families made regular use of the food bank since it opened, there has been a significant increase in demand with many people visiting each week.

Stocked with food donations from the community, the food bank is helping ease some of the difficulties that families are facing through this challenging time.

Alongside the food bank, Hungerford has also opened a clothes bank, recognising the support that refugee families need as they arrive in the country.

Jo Stephens, Headteacher of Hungerford School said:

“As a school, it’s always been really important to us to listen to what our community needs, and we know that right now, that includes support with food and clothes. We have a significant number of refugee families who all want the best for their children, and we passionately believe that we have a role to play in supporting them beyond the classroom.

“The food bank has always been well attended, but we’ve seen a sharp increase this month, and it’s a similar picture for the clothes bank. It’s been wonderful to have so much community support by way of food and clothes donations, but the need now is greater than ever before. We are proud to play our part and would welcome any further donations.”
