Help Eva and Jesse Rebuild

Donation protected
On October 2nd, 2017, a week after moving in, we lost our home to a fire.  Eva lost all of her possessions: everything from eyeglasses, the spare car key, the new mattress and box spring,  and Eva’s library of beloved poetry books, and books from high school and college marked with her notes and marginalia, and her great grandmother’s cast iron cookware.  Not to mention the invaluable and irreplaceable:  journals, mementos, letters, artwork created by Eva’s siblings, and her favorite stuffed animal, Timber Asplund the Siberian Husky, from Christmas 1997. Jesse, a public servant and firefighter, lost her professional tool set (which will cost around $2000.00 to replace), which is how she earns her living in the Bay Area when she’s not fighting fires in Arizona. Jesse lost her book collection and most of her clothing, shoes, and her favorite smart brown suit that she wore to her brother’s wedding.

We are in shock: grateful to be safe, healthy and alive, but only just beginning to process what it’s going to take to start rebuilding our lives. Little things like spatulas and paper towels, big things like our brand new mattress, all of our furniture, and most pressing: a place to live. We have just spent much of our savings on moving costs, deposits, etc. in the past two weeks leading up to the fire. In the immediate future, we need money for temporary housing, day to day items, contacts, new car keys, and countless other things. The costs are overwhelming. We are asking our beloved friends and family for any support you might be able to offer during this incredibly devastating moment of our lives.

We also welcome homemade food (this will help so much with expensive dining out while we’re without a kitchen and pantry), poetry (books and links), leads on housing, and especially some help with the overwhelming amount of paperwork that needs to be done as soon as possible.

We are so incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support we’ve already received in the past twenty-four hours.  Shout out to the Berkeley FD for putting out the fire. Shout out to Mike with the Berkeley FD: Eva put Jesse on the phone with him after he checked her out.  Jesse said, "I'm a firefighter, I'm in Arizona, and that's my girlfriend," and Mike knew exactly what to tell her: Eva’s CO level, 02 saturation, blood pressure and heart rate. Shout out to Kingman FD for supporting Jesse on shift as this was occurring and sending her home to Eva immediately.  Serious shout out to the incredible Asplund sisters, who always know just what to do, and to Eva’s mom for taking incredible care of us.  Thank you to Red Cross, who gave us money for basics like underwear, clothing, some food, and toiletries.

With so much love and gratitude,

Eva and Jesse
