On the evening of October 18, 2025, around 11:30pm, 87-year-old Eugenia, from Romania, was alone in her home, lying in bed and almost asleep when she began hearing loud cracking and rumbling sounds coming from the attic. Moments later, she smelled smoke.
Eugenia tried to evacuate, but her severe arthritis makes walking extremely difficult. As she struggled to get outside, she attempted to call her daughter, who lives with her but was not home at the time. However, her hands were shaking too much to use the phone. Desperate, she cried out for help, but no one heard her—until the chimney caught fire and collapsed onto a neighbor’s property. The noise alerted them, and they immediately called the fire department. By the time firefighters managed to extinguish the flames, one side of Eugenia’s home was almost completely destroyed, while the rest was heavily damaged by smoke and soot.
Eugenia is now staying with one of her daughters, but she deeply hopes to return to the home she has lived in for most of her life. With winter approaching and a very limited budget, repairing the damage is nearly impossible without help.
Your donation will go entirely toward rebuilding her home—covering construction materials and labor.
Please consider contributing if you are able. Every amount helps bring Eugenia closer to returning to the place she calls home.
