This is my amazing, strong, talented and determined Cousin, Elaina Lucia.
On June 18th, Elaina was taken via ambulance to a hospital in Miami where she currently lives. She was vomiting uncontrollably and lethargically slurring her speech. Elaina had a very serious infection and had become septic. The severe septic shock caused Elaina to go into cardiac arrest on June 19th. She was gone from us for quite a while before they were able to bring her back. Elaina has been in the ICU on a respirator via tracheostomy and in critical condition ever since. It is assumed that due to the extensive measures to revive her, a serious injury to her spinal cord occurred, leaving Elaina completely paralyzed. She has been able to feel touch, but unable to move any part of her body.
Although Elaina has taken great strides toward recovery, she cannot entirely breathe on her own and requires assistance. The plan is for Elaina to rehabilitate up here in Rochester where she can be in a facility close to her Mother and her extended support system of family. Although she has recently started to regain some feeling in her limbs, Elaina will require very aggressive rehabilitation.
Due to her current state, and the need for respiratory assistance, air ambulance is necessary for transportation to Rochester so we can give her the best chance for recovery. This is where we need help as soon as possible.
The cost of the air ambulance is roughly $20,000. Later today, you will see me post a link to a Go Fund Me page so that we can raise the funds to bring Elaina to her new home, close to her family who loves her so very much. It is also unknown, what other expenses will not be covered by insurance, so we are also trying to raise funds for any other financial stresses.
This has been a long few weeks, the first of which we literally sat by the phone, waiting for updates on her condition and praying that every time that phone rang that it wasn’t the end.
For those of you who don’t know, Elaina, despite being sick for most of her life, at the age of 34, now has two College degrees in Photography and is a published Photographer and Editor. Her plan was to move up here to Rochester in the Fall and pursue her career up here near family and friends.
Please help us to help Elaina start her recovery and live her life to its fullest extent. She’s a fighter, always has been and always will be!
