Dad's been struggling with Parkinson's Disease (PD) for the past 8 years. Parkinson's is a life long disease, there is no cure, only treatment. Over time the disease worsens and creates increasing discomfort, pain, loss of mobility, and tremors, but also causes stiffness or slowing of movement, making it hard to do what you love.
Our dad has hand tremors and struggles with movement, balance, muscle tension and soreness throughout his entire body.
Dad loves to go fishing, and is out on the water every chance he gets. He loves to draw, but due to the tremors it's completely out of the question. His movements are slow, and has made everyday tasks difficult, including simply eating.
He is beacon of humor and compassion for everyone around him. Always ready with a joke, always making funny faces in pictures, and always there for family and friends.
Dad has a gaggle of daughters, 5 in total, and 8 grand-babies from 3 to 13.
He was recently approved for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Surgery to help with his tremors. However, this is a costly procedure including multiple rounds of tests, scans, surgery, follow up appointments and hours of travel time to see his doctors.
Dad, continues to work, but his wife is retired and on limited income. The DBS surgery will put him out of work for over 2 months.
With your donations, dad can afford the cost of the procedure, travel expenses, and help with medical costs.
In Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery, electrodes are inserted into a targeted area of the brain, using MRI and recordings of brain cell activity during the procedure. A second procedure is performed to implant an IPG, impulse generator battery (like a pacemaker).
Although most people still need to take medication after undergoing DBS, many people experience considerable reduction of their PD symptoms and can greatly reduce their medications. The amount of reduction varies from person to person. The reduction in dose of medication leads to decreased risk of side effects such as dyskinesia (involuntary movements of the arms, legs and head).
