Thank you for taking your time to read our story!! My loving, sweet pup, Dachii will be undergoing a surgical procedure to repair damage to her vertebrae, otherwise known as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD).
1. Brief description
Abnormal intervertebral discs are a feature of Dachshunds which is linked to selection in the breed for the characteristic feature of short legs. These abnormal discs press into the spinal cord causing pain and spinal cord damage in around 25% of Dachshunds at some stage of their lives.
2. Intensity of welfare impact
Severe: intervertebral disc disease occurs frequently in the Dachshund breeds and causes pain which can be severe and prolonged. It is a disabling condition that may lead to death or requires euthanasia.
3. Duration of welfare impact
The pain caused by this condition can last for days to weeks and may recur. Pain control using drugs can be difficult. If paralysis occurs, this can last for days to weeks or can be permanent and can lead to euthanasia.
This condition popped up literally overnight with Dachii and has progressed rapidly, leaving her unable to stand or walk, and limiting her ability to move her head. Truly heartbreaking for anyone who has spent time with my wonderful pup and knows how much of a playful and loving girl she is. Unfortunately for us, the sudden onset of this condition and urgency of care gave me very little time to prepare for the costs. The typical cost of IVDD surgical repair including consultations, bloodwork MRI's, surgery, anesthesia, medication and other costs of care.
Anyone who has met Dachii knows that she is the sweetest dog and loves everyone and everything. She is the world to me and I want nothing more than for her to be happy and healthy again. To be able to crawl up on my lap for kisses and naps, go for walks, and play with all of her toys.
