Help Cure Peace Corps Pup, Maya!

Donation protected
Maya needs life-saving surgery to repair her kidney & bladder - she had a spay operation in Peru, where she is from; however, the vet left part of the uterus inside of her, which has likely attached to her bladder and is causing internal bleeding.  Please read her story below to find out why my sweet pup deserves a chance to live a long & healthy life!

Maya became part of my family in 2015, after starting my Peace Corps service in Peru.  We lived in a town called Puerto Eten, right on the beach!  Maya, the runt of a group of 11 siblings, is the one with her tongue out in the middle below :) She immediately became a loyal companion!

Living near the beach, Maya discovered her love for swimming early on in life, and will play fetch for as long as you are willing!  She is very sweet, goofy, doesn't like being alone, is always up for snuggling, and...really does enjoy long walks on the beach :)

Maya was spayed in Peru; however, it was done incorrectly, and she had to have surgery a second time in hopes of fixing the botched operation.  Poor Maya, despite being "spayed" twice already...became pregnant.  Sadly, none of her puppies survived after an emergency c-section.  If she did not have a c-section, she would have died when she went into labor, as there was no way for her to give birth naturally.  My group of Peace Corps Volunteers was evacuated suddenly just before her giving birth due to El Niño coastal flooding, and thank goodness my host family was able to take care of Maya for me until I returned after this incident.

As was the plan from the beginning, sweet Maya eventually made the trip back to the United States, but not without difficulties!  She didn't make her original flight due to bad weather and was stranded in Lima.  I couldn't leave my pup behind, so I went back to get her!  I recently started graduate school in Monterey, California, and, of course, Maya is here with me - once again enjoying life so close to the beach :)

Recently, she started urinating blood...and you would never have known she was sick if not for this, because she is her same old energetic and loving self.  I had to take her to a specialist, as the initial UTI diagnosis was inaccurate.  The discovery was made that she has a more serious issue with her kidney, which is no longer functioning properly.  Turns out, despite three operations in Peru, Maya still has part of her uterus erroneously left inside of her.  Her uterus is now filled with toxic matter and has attached to her bladder, which is likely causing the kidney damage.  Poor Maya has been through much more than any two-year old pup should have to go through.  What should have been a simple spaying procedure has turned into a nightmare that she does not deserve.  She deserves a shot at a long, healthy, and happy life, which the proposed surgery can give her!  Her surgery is scheduled for March 22nd, 2018.

Assuming no complications arise, tests, surgery, & post-op care will cost around $10,000; which, as a a recently-returned Peace Corps Volunteer and current graduate student, I do not have set aside.  I am unquestioningly going to do everything I can for Maya, I just do not know how to cover the costs.  She is family, and I love her dearly - but I'm extremely worried, and the financial burden is very heavy.  The option for pet insurance does not exist, as it falls under the category of a pre-existing condition.  I have never started a GoFundMe campaign, but Maya is worth it!  She deserves a cure, & no amount of help is too small.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your consideration to help cover the life-saving medical costs for Maya!
