Help Mia's Battle with Seizures, Insomnia, Anxiety
Donation protected
Graduating from high school this May, Mia is looking forward to a bright future loaded with opportunities! However, due to continued seizures, she is still unable to get her driver's license and both she and her family are concerned about her living alone, or even in a dorm. You see, Mia's seizures occur in her sleep, which greatly increases her chances of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). Living alone, or even with a roommate, this is a grave concern and motivates us to look beyond what mainstream medicine has to offer as far as answers (they have none).
Mia began having tonic-clonic seizures when she was 15, unprovoked and without reason. I (mom) asked all the doctors all the questions; pressed for tests to give us more information. But those in neurology, pediatrics and family medicine had nothing to offer in the way of answers and denied us the opportunity to even test for most potential causes. We were told to just medicate and hope that 1. the medicine will control the seizures and 2. the side effects will be tolerable.
But after 3 years of 2 different medications and increasing doses, she is still having seizures in her sleep. Mia and I want to pursue other avenues of treatment - and hopefully cure! Alternative therapies are not covered by insurance and I (mom) am still gaining my financial footing as a newly single parent.
Mia also suffers insomnia and anxiety, both of which are triggers for her seizures, so we'd like to address these as well. Mia has been accepted to Ball State University and plans to attend in the fall - her ability to manage stress and potential lack of sleep that is common with college life are things we'd like to address and resolve before she goes off on her own.
We hope to raise at least $3000 ASAP to pursue lab tests to check for hormone imbalances, Lyme disease, genetic mutations, etc, and the treatments for whatever we may find.
In addition to the funds, we would welcome referrals, recommendations or other ideas to pursue. Mia is loved by so many - her smile lights up every room. She loves her family and friends so deeply. She has such big dreams and goals and her whole life ahead of her. Thank you for reading her story, for caring about her. Thank you for sharing her story with others, for your thoughts, prayers and donations to help us resolve these scary seizures - and related insomnia and anxiety - once and for all!
