Help Cordelia void their gender warranty!

Donation protected
My friend Cordelia Yu is getting gender-affirming surgery on August 29th, and we're raising funds to make sure they're well-cared for throughout the process.

In everything Cordelia does, they build and nurture communities of care, share what they’ve learned, and light the path towards a more just future. Cordelia is always giving so much to their friends and communities, including:
  • baking hundreds of mooncakes to raise money for their neighborhood’s mutual aid group, Bed Stuy Strong, during the pandemic
  • stepping up to coordinate both the original 2016 version and the 2020 reboot of Letters for Black Lives, a resource and conversation guide to help foster intergenerational conversations about anti-Blackness
  • helping kickstart a letter led by journalists of color responding to the 2020 Harper’s letter on “civility”
  • supporting inclusive communities and spaces in journalism, design, and civic and progressive tech
  • pushing the federal government to provide better systems for serving the public in their day job (here's a talk they recently gave about it)
  • blogging about this very experience to demystify it for others in the future!

This surgery is an opportunity for all of us to reciprocate and shower them with love and care through an exciting but emotionally, physically, and financially intense time.

Every body’s timeline is different, but the recovery process for bottom surgery typically entails 3 months of intensive recovery, often including a full month of bed rest. While the major costs of Cordelia’s surgery are covered by insurance, their employer does not offer paid leave for surgery recovery. The funds we are raising will cover Cordelia’s living expenses while they recover, as well as costs associated with surgery and recovery for someone living alone, such as:
  • a doula to guide and advocate for them throughout the process
  • live-in care and culturally-appropriate healing meals for the first month of bed rest
  • facial and body hair removal
  • fertility preservation because trans people deserve family planning, too

If Cordelia’s recovery timeline is faster than expected, any excess funds raised will be donated to Queer Care , a trans-led community organization that provides free pre- and post-op care for people receiving gender affirming surgeries in NYC and the Bay Area.
