Officer Julio Herrera served 28 years with CMPD and passed away FOUR months shy of RETIREMENT in October 2021 from complications of COVID-19. Officer Herrera's career as a first responder started in 1993. In 1996 Officer Herrera became the SRO
(School Resource Officer) at Providence High School. Officer Herrera spent TEN years at Providence High school before moving to Ardrey Kell High School in 2006. Officer Herrera was at Ardrey Kell for 15 years until his unfortunate passing. During his career, Officer Herrera had many accomplishments: CMPD - 2 TIME SRO OF THE YEAR, LIFE-SAVING AWARD, CRIME STOPPERS AWARD, COMMUNITY RELATIONS AWARD, to name a few awards earned.

Officer Herrera was the longest-tenured SRO in North Carolina. He was highly respected and was chosen to visit Belarus and Russia to help set up and implement the School Resource Officer program in these countries.
Officer Herrera has been volunteering and mentoring youth most of his adult life while serving the community. Officer Herrera was a soccer Coach at Providence High School. While coaching at Providence High School the team won a State Championship. Officer Herrera even coached little league and was involved with middle school sports for a period of time.
Prior to becoming a CMPD Officer - Herrera was a standout soccer player as a youth and attended Belmont Abbey College where he scored a lot of goals. Herrera played soccer at Belmont Abbey College from 1986 to 1990. Julio's name is all over the record books at Belmont Abbey College. He was recently volunteering as a coach at Belmont Abbey with players on the college's developmental team.
"He was nearing retirement with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and was thinking about the things that he loved and his passions," Coach Keating said. Herrera's dedication to the sport made a good impression on not only the head coach, but also the young players.
"He was very good with the young men, very good at mentoring them," Keating said. "He was sort of like the 'tough uncle.'"
