Dear Friends and Family,

Clara Wright, of High River, Alberta, has recently been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer originating in the bone-marrow that requires intensive and concentrated treatment. Presently, Clara is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre at the Foothills Hospital.

During this first phase of treatment, Clara must remain in the hospital for at least a month as she will be experiencing serious side effects, including extensive bruising, extreme fatigue, and shortness of breath, as well as an increased risk of infection. If this first phase of treatment is successful, Clara will need to follow a maintenance program of recurring chemo treatments and platelet transfusions that typically lasts for two years, with each treatment cycle followed by a rest period to allow her body time to recover and regain its strength. Even after treatment ends, Clara will continue to need frequent follow-up exams and tests over several years.

As a single parent, with dependent children still at home, Clara will face financial difficulties as she will be unable to work and continue her private cleaning business. Therefore, any monetary donations will be extremely appreciated and will be used to cover her day-to-day living expenses, as well as her travel costs back and forth to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, as she battles this fast-acting and invasive cancer.

Dear Friends and Family,

As many of you are already aware, Clara Wright, of High River Alberta, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), an aggressive form of blood cancer originating in the bone-marrow that requires intensive and concentrated chemotherapy treatment, followed by a bone marrow / stem cell transplant (SCT), a crucial step in either curing the leukemia or putting it in remission. Fortunately, two of Clara’s sisters, Hilda Duffield and Margaret Elm, qualified as bone marrow / stem cell donors as their blood proved to be a 100% DNA match to Clara’s, with Hilda serving as the primary donor and Margaret being available as a back-up should Clara’s body reject Hilda’s stem cells.
Since her ALL diagnosis on March 25th, Clara has spent five weeks in the Tom Baker Cancer Centre taking multiple medications and undergoing radiation and chemotherapy to place the leukemia into a state of remission in readiness for an SCT. Although Clara was able to return home to High River for a few weeks in mid-May, she continued to receive her chemotherapy treatments in preparation for the transplant by alternating between the High River Community Cancer Centre and the Foothills Hospital. On June 21, after being re-admitted to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, Clara underwent a new round of chemotherapy and radiation to stop her bone marrow from producing blood cells and to condition her body for the SCT that took place on June 27. This process involved being infused with healthy blood cells that were drawn from Hilda’s blood the day before, on June 26.
Because Clara’s body will attempt to reject the donor stem cells, recovering from the SCT marks the beginning of a new set of challenges for Clara. After the transplant, Clara will need to take anti-rejection drugs and will be very sick. Consequently, she will remain in the hospital for three weeks and then reside in an apartment attached to the hospital for a three-month recovery phase to receive continued treatment and to deal with any complications. Although monitored closely by the Tom Baker Cancer Centre throughout her recovery, Clara will require a 24-hour caregiver for the three-month duration, a role to be scheduled and shared by her family.
As she moves into this next stage of her fight against leukemia, Clara would like to thank everyone for the love and support she and her family have received these past three or four months. Whether in the form of donations, groceries, meals, get-well greetings, or simple gestures of kindness, all are truly appreciated and will help Clara enormously in her continued battle against leukemia.
