Clara de Groot — the bubbly 11-year-old daughter of AP colleague Kristen de Groot and her husband, Ben — needs our help.
Clara was diagnosed with leukemia on Valentine’s Day. It’s acute myeloblastic leukemia, which in short means she’ll need to endure about 9 months of chemotherapy treatment in 5 separate courses. Clara will spend much of the remaining year in Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania (CHOP), which means she’ll also miss school, friends and the monotonies of everyday life that the rest of us too often take for granted.
Clara is a fighter who’s also worth fighting for. When she’s not busy kicking cancer’s butt, the inquiring student, budding artist, loyal friend and younger sister often is playing soccer or roller derby, where she rolls by the name “Martha Squashington.”
Clara is scared but remains positive and strong, as usual. And even though her hospital visitation list is limited to only four people, many are keeping her close in their hearts.
We know times are tough for many folks out there, and extra funds often are few. But even in these divisive times, Clara has brought us together.
