On December 1st, the unimaginable happened. In the wee hours before dawn, Chris and Dana Stanley were alerted by neighbors that their home in Liberty, Tennessee was on fire. Thankfully, the Stanleys were down the road at Chris’s mom’s house, where they were taking care of her dogs while she worked a night shift for a new job.
By the time Chris and Dana arrived at their home of 20 years, the house was engulfed in flames. Even with the brave work of the firefighters, their home could not be saved. Everything was gone. Chris’s favorite coffee mug. Dana’s mother’s china. Christmas presents bought with care and delightfully early. All gone. Most heartbreakingly, over 20 years of irreplaceable photographs and videos of their children’s first tooth, first haircut, first steps, graduations and other images of life’s most special moments.
Chris and Dana are hard working folks. Dana is a school bus driver and a house cleaner, and cares for extended family most days. Chris is everyone’s favorite handyman, and cares for dozens of homes in the DeKalb/Cannon County area. Of their four children, three boys and one girl, the two youngest still live at home. Their daughter is 15 years old and in high school, while their youngest boy is 11 years old. He is in middle school, where he receives special services for children with autism.
It is hard to imagine losing your family home, so close to Christmas, in a year with all the hardships brought by COVID-19. In a year where just last summer, Chris experienced the tremendous loss of his father. A year that all of us just want to be over, to begin 2021 with new hope and faith in starting afresh. Throughout all of these challenges, Chris and Dana’s faith has remained strong. As members of the Clear Fork United Methodist Church, they count their blessings every day. But starting over for Chris and Dana Stanley, and their children, will be so much more difficult.
