Help Carol Replace her Wheelchair
This fundraiser is to support an inspirational lady named Carol Hall.
In her early life Carol was very active. Her father ran an outdoor pursuits
centre in the Yorkshire Dales, which is where she enjoyed her school holidays exploring
the fells.
In her early 30s Carol had a mountain bike accident which damaged her spine. Coupled with her existing complex neurological condition this took her from walking with crutches to needing a wheelchair. Pain and limited mobility took its toll on a once active person. Carol believed she was incapable of using a manual wheelchair, so for at least 17yrs she used a power chair.
Fast forward to August 2020. Amid a global pandemic, Carol had a heart scare which saw her admitted to hospital. She was aware of her increased risk from Covid with being overweight, and this brief hospitalisation was enough to make her address her fitness and general health.
After buying a second hand wheelchair, the initial goal was for Carol to improve her diet, and lose some weight. As she built up her strength, the motivation and distances she was capable of travelling grew. By her 50th birthday in October, Carol managed her first 10km.
As a birthday present, Carol was gifted a virtual challenge, to wheel the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats. She set a goal to complete that by the end of 2021, but she smashed it in just five months.
Carol has gone from strength, not only completing virtual challenges, she is also aiming to take part in the Great North run and other long distance challenges.
Her motivation is no longer just to get a bit fitter, but also to encourage others to enjoy the outdoors and to support charities along the way.
With over 2000 miles completed the second-hand wheelchair is now failing. A front wheel fell off today.
Carol needs to find a more suitable wheelchair, up to the terrain and miles she throws at it. It not only needs to be lightweight but also needs push rims suitable for her lack of grip and limited hand use. This obviously comes at a cost. Let’s help get Carol back out into the great outdoors that she loves so much.
Carol tirelessly raises money for charities dear to her, let’s pay it back and get her mobile once again.
