Help Captain Kara & Her Salty Dog

Donation protected
Hurricane Irma came through St. Thomas, USVI showing no mercy. While preparing for Irma to come, Kara, a resident of St. Thomas, sailed her beloved 38-foot sailboat to Vieques, Puerto Rico to protect it from the storm. Irma then destroyed 90% of St. Thomas and has left many devastated, helpless, and fending for their lives. Thanks to good friends, Kara’s most prized possession – her four-legged companion Simon, survived. But her apartment and belongings were gone. With the support of friends, she was able to rescue Simon from the island and bring him back to St. Croix. Once on the island, she now realized her horror wasn’t over – Maria was on her way.

Kara tried to get to Vieques to get her boat before Maria came, but tickets skyrocketed to $2,300 for a round trip flight. She decided to make the best out of a terrible situation and stocked up on what she could. Once Maria hit, her conditions worsened and her survival mode kicked in. She bore the storm under a mattress in the laundry room while the roof was partially ripped away by the angry gusts. Her boat, which was her only means of income, was then destroyed after someone let the lines loose and stole her anchor.

Kara and friends have been driving to Christiansted on St. Croix during the lifted curfew hours to gather information and wait in line for any sort of food and water they can get. People are brawling in the streets and stealing items such as the main generator for the only AT&T cell phone tower on island. The weather hasn’t quit, and the home she’s been staying in has barely a roof left as well as being nearly missed by lightning twice since Maria. The government workers are hoarding the emergency batteries, gas, food, and water. This is a nightmare, and we need your help!

If you can’t give, please share her story with friends, family, coworkers, neighbors... really anyone. These funds are being raised to help Kara and Simon get evacuated off of St. Croix and start a new life. Any little bit helps. Her situation is becoming critical.
