Help build Brookings PLĀ

The Prairie Learning Academy (PLĀ)—an independent school serving Brookings and surrounding communities—was formed in August of 2021 by concerned area parents, educators, and academics during the pandemic.

The idea began with a group of families and community leaders who were seeking a learning environment that observed COVID-19 safety protocols recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Centers for Disease Control, and local medical and scientific experts. Once the group established a safe environment, they quickly reimagined their approach to teaching the children, said Laura Woodard, a member of the PLĀ board of directors.

"We are determined to foster progressive, experienced-based learning for our children. Retired SDSU professors are contributing enrichment presentations in PLĀ classes, and several retired public school educators and community leaders are contributing their expertise," she said.
