Help bring the Time Air fleet home to Lethbridge

Donation protected
The goal of this funding campaign is to support the costs of moving four vintage aircraft across North America to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, in 2023. All aircraft will be ground transported, and reassembled at CYQL, Lethbridge Airport. All moves require the use of multiple cranes, multiple semi-trailer trucks, a pilot car fleet, and permitting.

  • SHORTS SD3-30, a 30 seat turboprop aircraft
  • Convair CV580, a 50 seat turboprop aircraft
  • deHavilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, a 19 seat turboprop aircraft
  • FOKKER F-28-1000, a 65 seat jet aircraft

These four aircraft come from manufacturers from around the world: Canada, USA, the Netherlands (Holland), and Northern Ireland (U.K.). Here are our aircraft:

・BELFAST, ULSTER, NORTHERN IRELAND (U.K.) : C-GTAV / SHORTS SD3-30, s/n 3007 - Time Air was the FIRST Airline in the world to fly the type in 1976. Seven carriers in total flew s/n 3007. This Irish-built aircraft will be only one of two SD3-30's displayed in a Museum setting around the world. Only 141 of these aircraft were built. This aircraft is currently in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

・SCHIPHOL, NORTH HOLLAND, THE NETHERLANDS: C-FTAV / Fokker F-28-1000, s/n 11106. Originally designated to be built for the German Luftwaffe as a transport carrier, this aircraft was produced in 1976. Six carriers in total flew s/n 11106. This Dutch-built aircraft will also be one of only two Airline Configured F-28-1000's around the world to be displayed in a Museum setting. Only 241 were built. The aircraft is currently in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

・SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, USA: C-FTAP / Convair CV580, s/n 334. Produced as a CV440 in 1956. Originally a piston-engined aircraft, it was converted to turboprop in 1968. This was the most successful re-engining program of any airliner. A total of 1086 Convair piston-powered airliners were produced (including 10 in Canada by Canadair). Only 170 were converted to CV580 standard. Eight carriers flew s/n 334.. The USA-built aircraft will be the only CV580 in full passenger configuration, on display around the world in a Museum setting. The aircraft is currently in Montreal, Quebec.

・DOWNSVIEW (TORONTO), ONTARIO, CANADA: C-GBPE/deHavilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter, s/n 21. Built in 1967, this was the Twin Otter Demonstrator Aircraft for DHC during that time, which toured around the world. A total of 844 original Twin Otters were built. 10 carriers flew this aircraft. This will be the second oldest Twin Otter on display in a Museum setting. The fuselage has been transported to CYQL. The wings
and other empennage are ready for transportation. Those parts are currently located in Springbank, Alberta.

Our goal for this year is to repatriate these aircraft back to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. The Fokker F-28 and Twin Otter moves are well underway. The Convair and SHORTS moves will require the most work with planning to commence shortly.

The City of Lethbridge and also QL Aviation have allowed us secure spots to reassemble, park, and display these aircraft.

The story continues to evolve. Our goal is to celebrate, educate, and preserve these rare aircraft as a part of the aviation mosaic of Canada, for all to enjoy. Our first four aircraft represent just the beginning. The final destination will be a Centre to honour the larger Canadian Airlines story, and the many airlines (including Time Air) that were a part of this amazing avaiation history. With your help, we will be able to bring these stories to life.
