The Why:
Many children in rural Sub-Saharan Africa don’t have access to education, the way we do in Canada. As a result, they don’t have the knowledge we have to treat easily preventable diseases, such as infections from open wounds and drinking water that hasn’t been properly cleaned. My objective is to give these children a story they can understand that explains how these common illnesses are spread and how they can treat and prevent them.
The Book:
This 30-page, illustrated book is aimed for children ages 8-12 living in rural Kenya and Tanzania. It will be printed in both English and Swahili. The goal is to raise enough money to send 10,000 copies of this book to schools in Sub Saharan Africa. They would be distributed free of charge to children living in these areas.
The Story:
The book is a story about a woman, who has special powers that allow her to see what is going on inside of the body, teaching her granddaughter about common illnesses in rural Tanzania. As they venture through their village, they encounter people suffering from different diseases and infections and the grandmother explains how they affect the body and how they can be treated.
The Author:
In March of 2018, I travelled to Tanzania on a Me to We trip with my school. We stayed on the grounds of a local school in a rural village called Oldonyo Sambu, and I got to meet many of the children attending this school. While I was there, I learned a lot about the way of life of these students, especially the girls.
Being a science student, I was particularly interested in the healthcare situation there. I have always been fascinated by how the human body works and I wanted to share this knowledge with the children in rural Tanzania and Kenya and hopefully spark an interest in continuing their education.
