Help bring a Palestinian doctor to the UK to study

Donation protected
We are raising funds to help our friend, Dr Majdoleen Hussein, finish her Master's degree in Surgical Innovation at Imperial College London because she has unexpectedly had her funding withdrawn due to COVID.

We (Paddy and Claire) first met Majdoleen as medical students on a trip to Al-Quds University, Jerusalem, in 2013. Majdoleen was always there for us, helping us understand the health challenges faced by the people of the West Bank as she acted as our interpreter in UN clinics. She got stuck in at the kids activity groups we ran in refugee camps in Bethlehem and stepped up as the best tour guide, making sure we had a good grounding in Palestinian culture, namely hospitality and the most delicious middle eastern food!

Majdoleen travelled daily by bus past security checkpoints and waited in long queues in the heat to greet us and make sure we felt truly welcome. As a person we quickly realised that she is someone admirably driven and committed to helping those who are less fortunate than her. She has not faced the most straightforward journey through medicine, battling discrimination and conflict whilst also caring for her family.

We kept in touch and have been so proud to watch as she takes steps towards becoming a surgeon who specialises in complex vascular and transplant surgery. If she is successful she would be the only female surgeon of this type in the West Bank.

Surgical sub-speciality training is not available in Palestinian hospitals, so to gain the necessary experience she must do so abroad. Last year Majdoleen came to London to study a Master's degree in Surgical Innovation at Imperial College London. Her hope is to take the skills and knowledge she is learning back home so that she can set up sub-specialty training for the surgeons of the future.

Student life has been hard for many this academic year, and in January 2021 her tuition sponsor had to withdraw his offer to cover her fees due to the economic impact of COVID, leaving her with an immediate £3,800 invoice to pay for her next practical module (due at the end of May 2021). Due to the lack of financial support Majdoleen returned home just in time for the violent conflict there to erupt again, leaving many dead and injured and in need of the exact type of expertise which Majdoleen wishes to train for, to help save lives.

We want to bring Majdoleen back to the UK to finish her course and help her on her way to achieve her dream. The remaining balance for her Overseas MSc rate tuition still to pay gives us a total of £28,000 (due in Nov 2021). If anyone is more deserving of such support it is Majdoleen, a genuinely caring and compassionate doctor who is an inspiration to those who have the privilege of knowing her. Dr Majdoleen Hussein is extremely thankful for having the opportunity to train in a world-leading university and to help those in need in the West Bank. We hope you believe in her as much as we do!
