Help Bo Heal

On June 7, 2020, at around 7 pm, my two-year-old Yorkiepoo Bo escaped from my boyfriend’s yard. What followed was the most agonizing 12 hours of my life- we combed the streets on foot and by car but found no sign of him. Finally, we had to go home to spend a sleepless night without him. This morning, just when we were trying to accept we might never see Bo again, the heroes at the Tracy Animal Shelter called us. Someone had seen Bo being struck by a car (the driver kept going) and brought him in to the shelter.
We rushed him to the vet and got some mixed news. Bo needed emergency care for scrapes and road rash as well as x-rays for his injured back leg. Thankfully, he seemed to have survived his misadventure with no major damage to internal organs. Unfortunately, he had broken his pelvis. He needs emergency surgery to preserve his ability to run and walk on all four paws. It’s likely to cost $1100, plus around $500 for his emergency care today.
Bo is no ordinary dog. When I adopted him almost three years ago, I was at college, struggling with intense, newly diagnosed PTSD. “I don’t trust people anymore,” I told my doctor. “Well,” he told me, “how about a dog?” When I went to pick up Bo, he was surprisingly small and shy. He had spent most of his early life in a yard with little human contact and he was afraid of everything- doors, grass, trees, people. Little by little, Bo learned to trust the world, and he showed me I could too. He became my sidekick, even attending classes on my lap.
Bo hasn’t just changed my life, he’s touched many many lives along the way. Now he needs us. If Bo has changed your life for the better or made you smile, I’m asking that you donate what you can, whether that’s five dollars or fifty. If you can’t donate, spread some love anyway. Hug a dog. Encourage micro chipping and spay/neuter in your community. Help out at your local shelter.
