Help Betty Walk Again

Monday, September 2nd, Betty Field's life changed. As she sat watching TV, feeling completely fine, she experienced a painful back spasm that paralyzed her from the waist down. After being rushed to the hospital, she was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis, an inflammation of the spinal cord that damages the cover of the nerve cell fibers, interrupting the messages the spinal cords sends throughout the body. They are not completely sure what causes it. Only 1 in 3 experience a full recovery. Currently Betty is paralyzed from the waist down with a little feeling and movement in her right leg. It has been getting a bit better every day but it may be a year or more before we know where she will end up.
Betty spent 7 days at Penrose Medical Center receiving immunity boosting drugs and steroids. She is now at Capron Rehabilitation Center working on intensive physical therapy and learning how to adjust to life in a wheelchair. Although she was told she would spend 2 months there, her insurance will only cover until September 23rd.
We must act quickly. We only have a short time to get her living situation wheelchair friendly because it currently is not. She is going to have remodeling expenses, treatment costs, medical expenses, prescriptions, living expenses. We don't know how long it will be before she will be able to work.
Imagine having your life change in a instant. Those of you that know Betty, know absolutely that she will be one of the 1 in 3 that fully recover. Betty is a fighter. She is maintaining an amazingly positive attitude and working her butt off in rehab. She is making a little progress every single day. Of course she has befriended every employee and is actively working her political magic. I told her she is bending the hospital to her will! But she needs our help. She needs to be able to focus on her recovery, on walking again, without having to worry her finances. This is just a start. She has a long road ahead of her. She is going to need some significant financial assistance. This right here is why we need to majorly overhaul our medical system! We just don't know how this is going to play out and what her long terms needs will be. But right now we need to focus on some big expenses involved in just getting her home and able to continue with her physical therapy. Progress made in the first three months often determines the final outcome.
Betty has been a powerful influence in my life and I know that is true for many of us. I am in awe at how bravely she is facing this horribly traumatic, life changing event. If you can help, even a little, it is so appreciated. We will be giving regular updates and revising her financial needs as we learn more. Betty would love for you to stop by for a visit as well.
