In January 2019, 28-year-old Bernice Amago was returning home from her teaching job as a pupil teacher when she was knocked down by a mini truck. She was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in a state of unconsciousness where she was found to have sustained multiple facial laceration.
The driver was arrested and prosecuted in court. He was made to pay a fine to the court. Bernice has to rely on possible insurance claims for compensation which is still pending.
A medical report signed by Dr. Frederick Kwarteng. Consultant Surgeon at the Hospital said a CT scan of the head showed multiple intracerebral bleeds at the frontal and parietal regions. While on admission at the Trauma Intensive Care Unit. She developed aspiration pneumonia and had to put on intranasal oxygen for a period.
Bernice suffered a cardiac arrest in the process and was resuscitated. An electrocardiogram revealed that Bernice had pericardial effusion which made her suffer seizures and at a point had to be given blood transfusions to sustain her.
Due to the extent of injury Bernice suffered, the hospital ruled her to be of 97per cent incapacitation and three years on has still lost her memory, cannot talk or walk, remains bedridden with multiple bed sores and still feeds through a feeding tube.
The family has made many sacrifices to support Bernice’s medical treatment and upkeep. It has not been easy for them as they have broken their backs to provide care for Bernice for the last two years. Her father is a pensioner and her mother, a petty trader has stopped trading in order to take care of her because they cannot afford the services of a professional caregiver.
The family is seriously struggling to keep up with the financial responsibility of Bernice’s care and seeks the support of well-meaning persons to support Bernice either financially for her upkeep or medically with the hope of improving her condition.
