Help Bella get a Seizure Alert Dog

Donation protected

Our youngest daughter, Bella is 9 years old and is a very lively, fun loving girl.  She was born with a virus called congenital CMV which has caused many life long challenges for Bella including cerebral palsy, deafness with cochlear implants, oral dysphagia – non verbal and feeding problems, microcephaly, refractory epilepsy (drug resistant) etc.  Despite all this she absolutely loves life and gets the most out of every day.  She has a very cheeky sense of humour and is very determined.

Bella has life threatening seizures and these seizures require emergency medication, oxygen, suctioning, maintaining airway, close monitoring of her oxygen and heart rate and sometimes IV meds in hospital to help stop clusters.   This also takes a huge toll on the rest of the family including siblings Jarrad (15) & Thalia (12) who assist with caring for her in these emergency situations. Bella's neurologist has  informed us Bella is also at a significant risk of SUDEP (sudden unexpected death due to epilepsy) due to her EEG results and the severity of her epilepsy.  She isn't a candidate for surgery or medical invention due to the multiple places the seizures are occurring in her brain so this is a life long condition we need to live with. The latest testing shows that Bella’s autonomic nervous system is shutting down even with her smaller focal seizures for sometimes extended periods. This basically controls her breathing, heart rate, temperature control, swallowing ability, basically most vital body functions. Unfortunately given Bella's seizure type the standard monitors to detect seizures don't work for Bella and the only option is a seizure alert dog.  We have tried several seizure alert devices but they fail to detect her seizure and given the effect on her breathing and heart rate we need to be alerted immediately to give life saving medical intervention.  It is scary the amount of times we have found Bella blue, especially overnight because we missed the start of her seizure.  A seizure alert dog would alert us of this.

Bella is also growing up and wanting to be more independent, we are constantly worried she will have a seizure and she can’t be left alone even just to play in her room or eat at the table.  She needs constant supervision from having a shower to sleeping a night. Given her high risk of SUDEP she currently can't sleep alone.  A seizure alert dog would give her some independence especially to sleep on her own because it can alert us of a seizure during the night.  It would also give us peace of mind during the day to have the constant support of a seizure alert dog even when driving in the car, we currently can't do longer trips without an extra person because someone needs to constantly watch Bella. These dogs have special accreditation so they can go everywhere Bella goes.

These seizure alert dogs are trained to alert and even help care for and protect Bella during a seizure by rolling her onto her side.   They go through extensive training and are trained to detect an oncoming seizure ahead of time allowing us to get Bella into a safe position before the seizure occurs.  As she is getting older she is getting heavier so it is vital we get her into a safe position during a seizure.  Given the extensive training over 18months the dogs must undertake they are very expensive costing $40,000.

We would be so grateful for your support to enable us to get a seizure alert dog for Bella. Your generosity is humbly appreciated.  Please keep sending positive thoughts and prayers for our little girl ❤️
