Help Antonella to be the same again.

Antonella is the middle sister of my three children. The joy of our family, she is funny, clever, sassy and full of love; she can also get grumpy when she doesn't like something.

My daughter, who has Down Syndrome and half a dozen diagnoses, got a cervical incomplete Spinal Cord Injury seven weeks ago.

It all started with severe pain in her arm; we took her to the emergency room twice. She was treated with morphine due to the intensity of the pain and sent home within hours. We returned a few hours later, and they made us wait 4 hours to recheck her. By this time, the pain had increased and had moved to her neck, and she could barely move it.

The doctor who examined her said he did not consider it an emergency and that we should return after six days if the pain continued. We asked for an MRI, but they still said it was unnecessary.

We were back less than 48 hours and asked her to be admitted to the hospital, to which they agreed, but since it was already night, the MRI was done the next day. The results came up to be a hematoma, leading to the spinal cord injury diagnosis. She was hospitalized for almost two months but is now transitioning to Rehab.

For this reason, Antonella has impairments in mobility, transfer, self-care and activities of daily living, neurogenic bowel and bladder care, and transportation.

Due to these impairments, she requires adaptive equipment for safe ambulation and transfers, medical supplies to prevent complications and constant daily care.

After this, our life turned upside down, and her future changed dramatically. Her siblings and I have always cared for her, and this time will not be the exception, but now I should become her caregiver to assist in her rehabilitation, therapy, self-care, and daily routine. Before her injury, she was partially independent, and now she depends totally on me. Unfortunately, she doesn't have benefits other than Medicaid, no waivers, or any supplemental health insurance. Therefore, I need to make modifications at home and cover many expenses that are added to this new disability.

Antonella's recovery will be a very long road and will likely result in no less than 6 months in rehab. I refuse to leave her side. Unfortunately, life doesn’t come to a stop, and neither do monthly expenses.

Anto is fighting daily to regain her mobility, while I am also trying to adapt to this new lifestyle to continue being her primary support.

Anto survived open heart surgery almost five years ago because she is a warrior, and I know she will overcome this too. "I want to be the same again," is what she says every day.

The mental and emotional roller coaster is also part of our daily battle, but I will not give up on her.

Antonella es la hermana intermedia de mis tres hijos. La alegría de nuestra familia, es divertida, inteligente, atrevida y llena de amor, y también puede ser un poco gruñona cuando algo no le gusta.

Mi hija Antonella, quien tiene Síndrome de Down a mas de media docena de diagnósticos, sufrió una lesión cervical de la médula espinal hace siete semanas.

Todo comenzó con un fuerte dolor en su brazo; la llevamos a la sala de emergencias dos veces. Fue tratada con morfina debido a la intensidad del dolor y enviada a casa a las pocas horas. Regresamos unas horas más tarde y nos hicieron esperar 4 horas para volver a revisarla. En ese momento, el dolor había aumentado y se había trasladado a su cuello, y apenas podía moverlo.

El médico que la examinó dijo que no lo consideraba una emergencia y que debíamos regresar a los seis días si el dolor continuaba. Pedimos una resonancia magnética, pero aun así dijeron que era innecesaria.

Regresamos a menos de 48 horas y pedimos que la internaran en el hospital, a lo que accedieron, pero como ya era de noche, la resonancia se hizo al tercer día. Como resultado, se encontro un hematoma, lo que llevó al diagnóstico de lesión de la médula espinal.

Por esta razón, Antonella tiene deficiencias en la movilidad, la transferencia, el autocuidado y las actividades de la vida diaria, falta de auto control neurogénico del intestino y la vejiga y el transporte.

Debido a estas deficiencias, requiere equipo de adaptación para trasladarse con seguridad, suministros médicos para prevenir complicaciones y atención diaria constante.

Después de esto, nuestra vida dio un vuelco y su futuro cambió drásticamente. Sus hermanos y yo siempre la hemos cuidado, y esta vez no será la excepción, pero ahora debo convertirme en su cuidador para asistirla en su rehabilitación, terapia, autocuidado y rutina diaria. Antes de su lesión, era parcialmente independiente y ahora depende totalmente de mí. Desafortunadamente, ella no tiene más beneficios que Medicaid, no tiene exenciones ni ningún seguro de salud complementario. Por lo tanto, necesito hacer algunas modificaciones en casa y cubrir muchos gastos que se suman a esta nueva discapacidad.

La recuperación de Anto será un camino muy largo y probablemente resulte en no menos de 6 meses de rehabilitación. Me niego a irme de su lado. Desafortunadamente la vida no se detiene y los gastos mensuales tampoco.

Ella lucha a diario por recuperar su movilidad, mientras yo también trato de adaptarme a este nuevo estilo de vida para seguir siendo su principal apoyo.

Anto sobrevivió a una cirugía a corazón abierto hace casi cinco años porque es una guerrera, y sé que esta vez lo superará tambien. "Quiero volver a ser como era antes". es lo que ella dice todos los dias.

La montaña rusa mental y emocional también forma parte de nuestra batalla diaria, pero no me rendiré por ella.
