Help Alex Become Cancer Free

Hello, my name is Nabeel Mahmood and I am a graduate medical student. I created this GoFundMe for Alex, a 44 year old loving father and husband, who has been diagnosed with Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC). Over the course of a few months, Alex has had a mass growing on his face. At first, he thought of it as a pimple that got infected, and then re-infected. However, as time went on and the mass didn’t heal, my family took him to a dermatologist to get the lesion examined. We found out that the “infected pimple” is actually Basal Cell Carcinoma, or BCC. BCC is slow moving, but without intervention the cancer can/will eventually metastasize and become a far more lethal problem.

The good news is that there is a life-saving dermatological treatment for Basal Cell Carcinoma, called Mohs surgery, that is 99% effective at completely removing the cancer. The bad news is Alex is uninsured, and not a legal US citizen so he is ineligible for Medicaid. The out-of-pocket cost for the surgery is $12,000 and we are asking for your help to save Alex’s life.

To give you some context, my father introduced me to Alex a few years ago. We hired Alex to help fix a few things around the house. In getting to know Alex, I was deeply moved by his story. Alex is a handyman and a humble man. He came to America 7 years ago to make money to send back home to his son. Every dollar he breaks his back to earn is for his family. He's spent years alone in a different country out of love and commitment to his wife and son just so he can support them financially and give his son opportunities that Alex unfortunately never had access to. Alex is a self-taught, and hard-working man that I am proud to call a friend. Even though Alex has encountered hardships throughout his life that would cause others to give up and become cynical, he remains to be a deeply optimistic, empathetic person with a genuinely kind soul. Whenever there’s a job that needs to be done, Alex is right there to do it with a smile on his face.

I firmly believe that all human beings deserve medical care when they need it, but Alex deserves it especially so. We understand that $12,000 is a lot of money especially during the financial turmoil of the pandemic, but if everyone who sees this post donates even a small amount, we can easily reach our goal. It is crucial that we get the funds together ASAP before the cancer spreads, which it could at any moment.
