The story of Cristina and her fight against Nolotil
In November 2017, Cristina, a medical translator in Spanish hospitals, began to notice something alarming: some of her British clients had had sepsis, and unfortunately, some had even lost their lives. This coincidence caught her attention and she decided to investigate further.
Cristina discovered that all these cases had something in common: the patients had been taking a medication called Nolotil (Metamizol), the most widely used painkiller in Spain but banned in the United Kingdom, the United States, and many other countries due to its serious side effects. This revelation left her perplexed and motivated her determination to do something about it.
To be able to understand the magnitude of the problem, Cristina decided to create a Facebook page called "Cristina Research Information": and started investigating through Expats Groups across Spain. Her goal was to gather information about possible adverse reactions related to the consumption of Nolotil/Metamizol. What began as a search for isolated cases turned into a shocking discovery.
Cristina found that Nolotil could cause agranulocytosis, a sudden decrease in white blood cells, which left patients vulnerable to severe infections that their bodies couldn't fight. This condition had been known by doctors for a long time but considered so rare that many didn't even take it into consideration. Therefore, this information was crucial and had to be shared to prevent further tragedy.
As her research progressed, Cristina discovered hundreds of cases of people who had suffered terrible consequences due to this medication. There were cases of death, situations where people had been on the brink of death, and others who had to face serious and lasting aftermath, such as amputations. The severity of the situation further fueled her fight for justice and patient safety, and in November 2018, Cristina created ADAF - Association of People Affected by Medicines, of which she is the President.
Since then, Cristina has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about the dangers associated with Nolotil. She has managed to capture the attention of doctors, medical authorities, and the general public. Her efforts have been crucial in elevating the debate about the safety of this medication to a higher level.
Cristina has not let difficulties stop her in her fight. She has invested long hours of research, attended meetings, travelled, and used personal resources to address this issue. This issue can be summarized as follows: the best-selling medication in the country, manufactured by one of the most powerful pharmaceutical companies in the world, with hundreds of people affected, not to mention all the cases that have yet to come to light. It is a medication that, despite being aware of the situation, continues to be the most widely used in Spain and is administered or prescribed to patients without providing them any information, and in many cases, against the patients' will.
Due to the magnitude of the situation, Cristina has always been aware that this cause would require a law firm, but not just any law firm, the right one. That is why Cristina, on behalf of ADAF, has partnered with Almodóvar & Jara law firm - in order to achieve the following objectives:
• To stop the prescription of Nolotil/Metamizol to people from countries where it is banned, particularly the British, as there is a known higher hematological sensitivity to severe hematological reactions with metamizol treatment, which is why the UK's MHRA and the US FDA do not market it.
• To provide legal assistance to those affected in seeking compensation and accountability for the harm caused.
• To fight for justice, patient rights, and safety in the use of medications.
Your help is essential to achieve our goals, and that is why we have created this crowdfunding campaign. To start with, the lawyers will need a budget of 9000 euros so they can conduct a study of the Nolotil cases.
Every donation counts and can make a difference in the fight for justice for the victims of Nolotil. Let's support Cristina in her fight to end the suffering caused by Nolotil and ensure a safer healthcare system for everyone!
