Imagine leaving work to run to a quick doctor’s appointment only to find yourself being admitted to the hospital a few hours later for a cancerous brain tumor. While no one is prepared to face this situation, Laura Scarbrough is now living this reality and fighting for her life. Laura has spent her life helping others as an an encouraging educator, mother, and wife. Now, she needs our help.
Who She Is:
Laura is a Special Education teacher at Hosp Elementary in Frisco, TX. Beyond her work with children with special needs during the day, she continues her care and support for children with disabilities by looking after another young girl after school. Her loving patience is well known to her students and coworkers. In addition to her work in the classroom, she is also a provider for her household and a nurturing mother of three with two daughters at home just starting college, and a son getting married next month. Laura is an active member in her church, St. Philip's Episcopal. She has dedicated her life to providing others with constant love and support.
Her Challenge:
Laura has recently been diagnosed with a very aggressive grade 4 brain cancer called Glioblastoma Multiforme or GBM. This disease is incurable, and the doctors have said that she has a long struggle ahead of her. Unfortunately, she will not be able to return to work this school year. She does not have disability insurance and she has used all of her district issued sick days during her initial surgery. In addition to this lack of income and emotional turmoil, Laura’s husband was unexpectedly laid off work last month. Now the family is without two incomes and faces insurmountable medical costs. The money donated will help alleviate Laura’s medical expenses, premiums, and treatment, which will include daily chemo and radiation.
