It doesn't look like much, right now, but this is my dream home.
Hi, I'm Gwynne, and I'm a spiritual hermit living in Flint, Michigan. Yes, that Flint.
The house that I live in was foreclosed for back taxes last year - and as a non-owner occupant, I have been offered the opportunity to buy the house.
For $4000.
Yes, that's a four with three zeroes after it.
This would give me life-changing stability. Owning a home means I'd always have somewhere to live, without stressing about rent every month. Property taxes will only be about $650/year.
But more than that, it's the chance to finally live my dream of creating a sustainable urban hermitage with a food forest in the backyard, a pollinator garden in the front yard, and a cat sanctuary. Because I've also accidentally become the neighborhood cat lady, caring for several strays, rescues, and fosters.
There are already raspberry bushes established in both the front and backyard. A pond with gold fish. A workshop that I'll be converting into a meditation center. A wood stove in the living room for winter heating.
I am currently studying permaculture, and long-term plans include sustainable energy and water practices, adding several fruit trees - in addition to the already established mulberry trees - and creating areas for rest and recharging of the soul.
As I improve the property, I'll also be adding a tiny house to the backyard for solo private retreats - either to come and be a hermit for a bit, or to help with the food forest and other projects at the hermitage.
And of course, as those improvements are made, I'll be sharing it all on Facebook, Twitter, and even YouTube so that others can learn from what I'm learning and doing.
