Solar Cookers for Haitians

Donation protected
Since the beginning of this fundraiser, this project has evolved from raising the funds to give one family solar power, into an amazing effort to bring Solar Cookers to the Haitian families of the children that attend Greater Good School in  La Gonave.

Greater Good Haiti is a non-profit that was founded by Kelly Kobza in 2010.  She is a teacher that was inspired by her work for disaster relief in Haiti and decided to create an organization that would promote the education of children.

In January, I will be joining Earthship Bioarchitecture in the building of a fully sustainable, off-grid and food-producing school for Greater Good Haiti.

I am now working directly with Greater Good after the Earthship build to provide education and models of solar cookers to the families of the students.

So, what are solar cookers and why do Haitians need them?

Currently, Haitian families are spending up to 50% of their income on the purchase of charcoal in order to fuel their kitchens.
Additionally, Haiti has been deforested by the use of wood for kitchen fuel.
Now most people rely on coal which contributes to the excelling of climate change along with fatal conditions that families suffer from because of the consistent inhalation of toxic fumes in their kitchens.

Solar cookers are a sustainable and environmentally responsible alternative to cooking over coal or wood within the home. The cookers use the heat of the sun to cook food. They are cheap to build and the materials can be sourced locally.  The solar panels for the cookers can be made out of recycled plastic by using simple plastic shredder and extrusion machines. Using recycled plastics for this design is a great way to introduce a regenerative environment on the island and to decrease the amount of plastic wastes littering Haiti's streets and shores.

With the help of Karl Ekdahl, a Baltimore-based engineer and activist, we will be creating the master plans for the plastic shredder and extrusion machine. They will then be recreated in a series of workshops on the island facilitated by myself and hosted by Greater Good School.

These workshops will be held in February of 2020. The process of building these machines will start immediately, so I am asking for donations to make this project possible!

Any amount is magnificent because it comes from your heart and your willingness to contribute to a life-changing cause.
