Dear Friends,
It is with great regret that I inform you of a tragic event that happened to our close friend, Jason Vilchez, just days before he went off to college. Jason was at home watching soccer with his little cousin in the early afternoon when there was a knock at the door. He went to answer it and was then confronted by two armed men who put Jason and his cousin on the floor and proceeded to go through the entire home, taking all items of value, including phones, computers, and a stash of his family’s hard earned savings. The men then proceeded to flee, and left Jason without any means of contacting the police or his parents. By the time he has was able to get word out, the suspects were long gone. Authorities have been unable to track them down and it seems impossible that they will do so.
We are grateful that Jason and his cousin were physically unharmed, however the financial and emotional damage inflicted upon their family is so great that without your help, they will be displaced from Berkeley, the community in which Jason and his three siblings have lived in and attended school their whole lives.
With this mind, we ask the community to come together, and contribute any amount to his cause.
Jason is a peer, teammate, and close friend to many of us in the Berkeley community, and it is crucial that in this difficult moment we support him and his family.
Jason attended Thousand Oaks Elementary , Martin Luther King Middle , and Berkeley High schools in his 18 years in Berkeley. He was also captain of the BHS Varsity Soccer team, key player for California Magic in Orinda, and member of the CAS learning community of Berkeley High.
Jason will be attending UC Riverside this Fall as a Business Economics major.
