The Enabled Children Initiative (ECI) is an independent non-profit organization registered as a 501(c)(3) with a branch office in Afghanistan that supports children with disabilities. We believe disability is not inability. We provide residential, educational, income generation support & emergency aid to children & youth living with disabilities & their families in Afghanistan.
2023 marks 10 years of ECI’s work. We started small—a few friends raising funds through our networks to help some of the most vulnerable children in Afghanistan.
ECI has grown to deliver 6 programs across 6 provinces of Afghanistan, with over 50 Afghan employees. We’ve helped nearly 600 families living in poverty care for their disabled child, provided 3,000 hot meals and over 200 food packages to families in need, provided livelihoods for 200 families with a disability, educated 65 children with disabilities, housed 30 orphans with disabilities, provided disability awareness sessions to over 5,000 men & women, & helped 22 young people with disabilities gain employable skills & access higher education.
As we have grown, so have the challenges of working in Afghanistan. We need your support to #KeepGoing & #KeepGrowing! All of our programs have children and families on the waiting lists, and your donation will help keep our programs in Afghanistan open and expanding to reach more children in need during these challenging times.
This is the impact your gift will have:
- $1250 covers 1-year of university education for a young woman with a disability
- $500 provides 1-year of home-based education for an out-of-school child with a disability
- $330 provides a 6-months tailoring & sewing course for a young woman with a disability
- $250 provides one month of education, healthcare, food and physiotherapy treatment to an orphaned child with a disability at Window of Hope
- $200 provides 3-months of food and essential supplies to a family living in poverty with a disabled child
- $130 provides one month of quality education to a child with a disability at Enabled Children School
- $120 enrolls one family in ECI's 3-month family support program for those living in poverty who have a disabled child
- $80 covers 1-year of healthcare costs of an orphaned child with a disability
- $53 covers 1-year of physiotherapy treatment for a child with a disability

Bibi Asiya's Story
Bibi Asiya is a girl with a disability in Kandahar province who was kept locked in a cage for 15 years.
Our team in Kandahar visited the family & enrolled them in our Community-based disability awareness & support program, helping them set goals for her care & treatment. She now receives medical treatment, psychological counseling, and medications & has new clothes. The family has discarded the cage, and received awarenss training on disability. ECI supports a caretaker for her & provides training. Below, Bibi Asiya is pictured at a celebration in her home with her siblings and cousins celebrating International Children’s day.
Sahar's Story
Sahar has an intellectual disability; for years, she struggled with bouts of violence and hyperactivity. She was expelled from her local school multiple times until her father noticed our school bus picking up students with disabilities one morning in his neighborhood and asked about the school. Now Sahar is enrolled in our Enabled Children School, attending classes as well as psychosocial counseling sessions. She is thriving.
