Helen Sue Rerko Memorial Scholarship

Helen Sue Rerko, 80, died as a result of a stroke on September 24th, 2020. She was the kind of person who could drastically change the lives and philosophies of others through subtle acts of kindness or appreciation. She was born February 18th, 1940, and lived in Clearfield country her entire life. Her mother died when she was only 6, and her father when she was 13; leaving her to be raised by her brother Johnny. Despite the hardships she faced in life, Helen never let her circumstances define her negatively, and instead epitomized the very best qualities associated with her generation: hard work, independence, graciousness, and empathy. 

As her granddaughter I have had the immense pleasure of spending more time with her than most got to, and over the years I have come to greatly appreciate the outstanding example of a human being that she was. Modern society often forgets to appreciate how much depth there really is to 'simple people' and their humanity. Though many do appreciate a helping hand in times of need, we often focus more on how the problem is alleviated as opposed to the thoughtfulness of the person helping us-- and we usually don't realize how much a passing hello, being checked up on, and a good conversation can mean until it's gone. 

Helen freely gave so much to her community and individuals in need during her lifetime, both financially and through personal service, which is why I want to create a scholarship in her name so she can continue to give to others even after her passing. 

The scholarship will be in the amount of $500 to $1,000, for:

1. Students who demonstrate exemplary participation in community or religious services

2. Students who demonstrate great care for senior citizens and their emotional and physical welfares

3. Students who have overcome a hardship in their lives that has made their moral character stronger as a result

Applications for the scholarship will consist of an itemized list of activities and an essay (500 word minimum) explaining why the applicant thinks they are best suited to be awarded the fund.

ALL FUNDS EARNED ON THIS PLATFORM WILL GO TOWARDS THE SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE CLASS OF '20-21 AND FORWARD.
