I've been accepted to this summer's 'Health in Prisons' course at Johns Hopkins University! Support me as I take this journey and work to become an educated expert, compentent collaborator and avid luchadora of prisoner and detainee health.
My name is Frida and I am a Latin American woman, community member, public health worker, and activist from Tucson, Arizona. Over the past three years, in collaboration with the Alliance for Global Justice, I have been doing work around health, prisons, and human rights. I was first inspired by the work of political prisoner Liliany Obando and her collection of testimonies of women and mother prisoners in Colombia. I have independently studied prisons and incarceration as a social determinant of health, however I have not been able to fortify my knowledge and skills within a structured academic context. The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health is one of the leading public health institutions in the world, and having this course under my belt will seal my commitment to this field of work and struggle.
This course is a collaboration between the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). My ultimate goal is to become a Detention Delegate for the ICRC and use my public health skills to protect the human right to life and the human right to health for prisoners and their families.
