Healthcare and Insurance for a Cambodian Family

Hi, my name is Andrew and I am fundraising to pay for healthcare expenses and health insurance for a Cambodian family.
This fundraiser will help to pay for healthcare expenses and/or provide health insurance for 13 people for one year.
For the past 15 years, I have lived with this family in Banteay Chhmar, Cambodia. They are a very wonderful, generous and honest family. They have and show unconditional love.
While healthcare in Cambodia is better now, there are still many missing parts. We need to travel an hour to the nearest city for very basic healthcare. There are more advanced hospitals and skilled doctors in Siem Reap (3 hours) and Phnom Penh (8 hours).
I want to provide my family with a healthcare expenses fund.
Or, an insurance plan through a regional, legitimate health insurance company (Forte/Safety Net). I use this company for my own health insurance, and they have provided coverage when I’ve needed it.
- A Healthcare Expenses Fund to be used as needed
- and/or
- A Health Insurance Policy (Note that there are different levels of coverage and benefits)
- The below fundraising amounts provide and pay for health insurance for 13 people (not per person!)
- $2,500 provides a basic health insurance plan ($12,000 annual maximum per person)
- $3,200 provides the above plus doctor visits, prescriptions, investigations, preventative health screening and vaccinations
- $3,500 provides a basic health insurance plan ($18,000 annual maximum per person)
- $4,500 provides the above plus doctor visits, prescriptions, investigations, preventative health screening and vaccinations
- Any funds raised beyond will be used for any travel and other expenses related to their healthcare needs or for future annual premiums (maintained in an interest-bearing account in their name)
Most people here will simply not go for medical care or health checkups because of the costs and only as a last resort. There is also a lack of nearby, competent doctors and nurses in our village area. Finally, families will often borrow money from banks at exorbitant rates (typically around 20%) to pay for medical debts.
I do not want my family to be in these situations. I want to take care of them when they need medical care.
Banteay Chhmar is a remote area close to the border with Thailand. There is a large Angkorian temple here and a small local, community-based tourism project.
My family participates in the homestay and tourism project as well as earning money from farming and they have a small shop. Like most people in rural areas, families typically have many jobs to make ends meet for a simple level of living.
Some saved funds for healthcare expenses and insurance is certainly better than having nothing.

- All funds will be transferred into a Cambodian bank account co-owned by the family
- Any funds above the fundraising amount will be held for travel expenses related to medical emergency needs or for purchasing a more robust insurance policy or for future annual premiums and medical needs
- Proof of bank transfer and health insurance coverage or expenses will be available upon request
