2020 brings out some challenges! What a year it has been (and is).
My sister Mary has the biggest heart. She loves to learn and is always thinking of others. In the dictionary next to the word kind is a picture of my sister’s sweet face.
Mary works to help others increase their opportunities in life. Mary prays, is encouraging, and does her best to stay positive. Sometimes, the challenges get ahead of us, and now is one of these times.
Mary learned she has breast cancer, and she has no health insurance. She is keeping her focus on healing and doing her best to continue her positive attitude. The medical bills are partly covered with special programs, but we are only starting this journey. When you're sick, work is limited, and those bills keep coming in. Do any of us need more stress this year? Yikes!
We are all praying for Mary’s health and well-being and now we are praying for her financial recovery, too. Every donation helps us reach our goal and helps Mary. 100% of the funds will be directly used for Mary’s medical bills and support.
We are raising $8,000 to help pay the bills and give Mary some time to get back on her feet. The stress from learning she has breast cancer is taking a toll. This is an opportunity for each of us to show Mary she is not alone. Can you pitch in $5 or $50 (or more)?
My Mom (known to many as Miz Jean) knows this path all too well. Here is a bit of her story.
Breast cancer - that’s two words. But in my family, it’s one word. And it has been a dirty word for us since the 1960s. My oldest sister was diagnosed with it, had a mastectomy, and went on with her normal life until 1967 when they discovered she had multiple myeloma (a different form of cancer) and she died in 1970 at age 50 years. In the next decade, my second sister (18 months younger than my oldest sister) discovered breast cancer and had a mastectomy. The next year she had a second mastectomy. During that same decade, my mother discovered a lump and had a mastectomy. In June 1999, I discovered a lump and wound up with a mastectomy, chemo, and radiation.
I have been cancer free for 21 years. Cancer free. That’s two words. Two clean words.
Now my daughter has been diagnosed with breast cancer. My goal for her is to have a diagnosis of cancer-free for decades also.

Mary’s Journey:
With a family history of breast cancer, I show up for my annual mammograms and am always grateful each year when a favorable report is delivered. This isn’t the case for me in 2020. One mammogram turned into two, which isn’t that odd. Then came the phone call for an ultrasound and then on to the first of two biopsies.
I count on dream messages to give me direction, as well as prepare me for the unexpected. And so it is for this journey. The night before the biopsy, I dreamed of a doctor reading a report when out of the blue, five “startled face” emojis that looked like a friend who had just had a double mastectomy appeared on the report. I woke up with the sense that I was being prepared for this part of the experience.
The next day I am lying down while a doctor and four nurses are busy in the room with this biopsy. During a quiet moment, I asked the doctor a question. “Does the number five or five startled face emojis have anything to do with this procedure?” The doctor asked if I had been advised as to what this procedure was, which I had not. She said,"This is a five BI-RAD and it must come out."
I continue to pay attention to dreams in each step of my journey. My dreams are showing me to release bitterness and resentment. I am very motivated to allow my memories to surface, to acknowledge each one, and then let go. I am beginning to have dreams that are giving me hints as to how to rebuild my life, and for that, I am grateful. I have an expanded appreciation for self-care that includes a high value for peace and love.
