Bonnie’s Story:

Bonnie’s path to being an amazing healer began after a detrimental car accident left her unable to walk.  Modern western medicine was unable to provide a cure to her neurological condition, but this opened up opportunities to look into other forms of medical intervention. As a result, Bonnie left a promising Neuroscientist career to study as  Naturopathic Doctor at the Naturopathic School of Medicine in Toronto.  Bonnie is an adventurer and has traveled around the world to learn different aspects of health, healing and medicine.  Her list includes: Neuroscientist, Apprentice of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Student of Naturopathic Medicine, Reiki Practitioner, Certified Bowen Therapist, Resonance Therapy Practitioner, Accredited Yoga Teacher, Yoga Tune Up Teacher, Yoga Teacher Trainer, Childbirth Educator, Pelvic Floor Specialist and Movement Specialist.

She knows a LOT about the body, how it functions and how to heal it.

On one of Bonnie’s adventures to India, she became certified to teach Moksha Yoga.  This catapaulted her love of yoga and went on to learn different styles and schools of thought. She taught classes almost daily across the greater Toronto area, infusing her medical knowledge and gems she learned from worldwide healers abroad.  Her classes were so pact, always full of people that just wanted a taste of what she had to offer.  Bonnie was an amazing yoga teacher and healing practitioner.  The physical workout she gave was just a bonus, but in her classes she just had a way to guide you through meditation that felt like a massage for the brain and healing for the soul.  She had a way of helping people live healthy lifestyles and opening people up to an awareness within.  Bonnie always said that the most satisfying moment in a student's practice is when there is a shift, almost like a moment of recognition, where the physical practice deepens and she almost sees a mental click where all parts of oneself align...This is when the magic happens.

Long story short, Bonnie is one of the healthiest people I know.  So last year when she got diagnosed with breast cancer, it rocked her world and all those who knew her.  Cancer does not affect healthy people, living healthy lifestyles.  Or so we thought. How can someone so focused on helping others with their health, someone who regularly meditates and exercises and has a healthy diet get cancer themselves?  It’s just unheard of.  The one thing I learned from this experience is that if cancer can happen to Bonnie, then it can happen to anyone. Cancer does not discriminate.

The second Bonnie found out, she did NOT become a victim of circumstance and wallow in her sorrow.  Of course not, that’s just not Bonnie.  Instead, she went into research mode and learned everything she could about the disease and the treatments.  She was strong, mentally and emotionally.  She even consoled those around her, for everyone else had a harder time processing what she was experiencing.  She had faith that she was not only going to recover but be an even better version of herself.

Months and months after the awful news Bonnie conquered her quest!  After chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, Bonnie was in the clear and on her way back to great health.  She’s seriously the strongest person I know!

Another Journey

In October, Bonnie started having pain in her neck, back, and lung area.  She found out that she had a fractured spine and a punctured lung.  The doctors believed that the disease we thought she defeated may have spread to other areas.  While this news was not the greatest,  this was just another challenge for Bonnie.  Upon learning this news, Bonnie’s attitude was not one of defeat or despair, but rather of hope and inspiration: Finding a true cure for this disease that has affected so many people.

Bonnie knows this is part of her life's path, part of her journey for a bigger purpose in helping others.  In the Hawaiian culture, this concept is known as Kuleana.  This is a term used to convey a deep rooted responsibility or duty that exists at the level of the soul, level of being, level of human existence.  It is a mindset, a way of life, and speaks to living a life of value, alignment, and integrity.  This is something that Bonnie takes seriously and has immense gratitude for this experience.  Don't misunderstand: this by no means dictates this to be easy on any terms.  It does, however, illustrates the importance of how this movement is bigger Bonnie, bigger than one person, bigger than the whole. This effects us all.
This is about raising awareness of healthcare and how it’s currently being provided. This journey has put her on the other side of the table as a patient and it has opened her eyes to experiencing effective and ineffective ways of treating cancer.  She wants to bring in better ways for testing that can provide more individualized and specialized treatment plans which are more effective and have less side effects.  She wants more advanced technologies that are used in other parts of the world to be accessible to all.  And most importantly, she wants healthcare to take a more holistic approach to healing; it is not just about the physical body, but all the parts of ourselves that make us human.  She wants to create a movement where additional funding can be provided for research towards medicine and newer treatments.

At this time we are seeking alternative treatments outside of the country and need to raise funds to make this happen.  The fact that she has to even travel in her condition is a driving force of why she wants these treatments to be more accessible to people in her shoes.
As one of my BFFs Bonnie gets to hear all about the trivial things in my life, my struggles and difficulties of my career, working hours upon hours all the while raising 3 girls at the same time, my lack of sleep, making ends meet etc.  All the while she’s going through a series of treatments, in and out of doctor’s appointments, being poked and prodded by needles, meds and IVs AND still raising her 2 young girls.  She is a mother, wife, Godmother, sister, daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, cousin, aunt, teacher, entrepreneur, healer, health practitioner, lover of life, and citizen of the world. When I put this into perspective, my struggles seem like a piece of cake.  When I struggle and I think about her; it makes me stronger, it gives me hope.  I think to myself  “If Bonnie can go through what she’s going through, then I can do this”.  “If Bonnie can do it, I can do it”.

I ask you to join me in supporting my dear friend on her path to radiant health.
